On Harleys with a rear swingarm (e.g. FLH, Softail, Sportster), there's no such thing as a single "optimal" tension for the rear chain. Depending on how much the swingarm compresses, the chain can range from slightly loose to far too loose.
With these secondary chain tensioners featuring a spring-supported polyurethane roller, the rear chain is kept under constant spring tension, which helps reduce chain slack and dampen chain slap.
