Axle Adjuster Plates for Models 1911-1926
Axle Adjuster Plates for Models 1911-1926
To adjust the rear axle for chain tensioning, these ingenious plates are used. They feature two differently long tabs, each with a notch. The adjusting screw on the frame presses with its tip into the notch. Depending on the mounting position of the plate, it is suitable for a wide range of axle positions and chain lengths. There are two versions with different axle diameters, depending on which Harley-Davidson model from the 1911–1926 period you have.

Spring-loaded Secondary Chain Tensioners
Spring-loaded Secondary Chain Tensioners
On Harleys with a rear swingarm (e.g. FLH, Softail, Sportster), there's no such thing as a single "optimal" tension for the rear chain. Depending on how much the swingarm compresses, the chain can range from slightly loose to far too loose.
With these secondary chain tensioners featuring a spring-supported polyurethane roller, the rear chain is kept under constant spring tension, which helps reduce chain slack and dampen chain slap.

Chain Tensioners, Belt Tensioners

While the toothed belt to the rear wheel only needs to be tightened when the wheel is installed after a tire change, it is advisable to check the chain tension every 5,000 km at the latest.

How To Tension

It's best to jack up the Harley and turn the rear wheel a few times while checking the tension on the lower chain strand (the sagging part of chains or belts is called that in the technical jargon). Once you have determined the position at which the lower strand is tightest, readjust the chain tension in this position. Why not measure it at the top? When the motorcycle accelerates, the upper strand is under load and tension. Since chain tensioning is about the play of the chain under load, you measure it at the lower sagging part of the chain. This also applies to toothed belts. Logical, isn't it?

Check the Chain and Belt Alignment

In addition to the correct tension, it is also important to ensure that the rear wheel remains in line with the front wheel when tensioning, i.e. not to tension more on one side than on the other. You will realize that you have done something wrong at the latest when you set off, when you go straight ahead and the handlebars are turned slightly to one side. Professionals use lasers to check the alignment. We have linked the CAT Laser from Profi Products up here in the accessories.
