From 1928 on, on their smaller displacement SV motorcycles (singles and twins) Harley-Davidson used two types of kickstarter return springs: smaller and narrower ones up to 1940 and the larger ones for 1941 and up, the latter by the way still on Sportster models until 1979. They are not interchangeable and should be chosen according to the year of the bike.
