Camshaft drive chains cannot do without special tensioners if valve timing is to be set precisely to the degree. The Twin Cam engines from Harley-Davidson even used two timing chains, meaning they require two chain tensioners. Spring-loaded in the Twin Cam 88, oil-pressure controlled in the Twin Cam 96.
