Especially on highly stressed connections such as the nuts of transmission sprockets and pulleys, Harley-Davidson relied—up until the mid-1980s—on lock washers. The center is splined to the sprocket or shaft, and the folded tabs provide a form-fitting lock against the nut’s hex.
