Morris Magneto

There are few products on the HD aftermarket which became iconic but Morris Magnetos certainly are among them and have been the favoured choice of sporting riders since decades. Magneto ignitions have a long tradition with Milwaukee’s finest on both street and race motorcycles and in their heyday were considered as the performance ignition of choice. Admittedly, today with space age, programmable, digital multi-spark battery ignitions, magnetos appear somewhat outdated but if you are looking for a reliable, powerful and simple ignition system, a magneto is still an option. Besides, it looks as cool as cool can be.

Battery ignitions depend on a charging system, battery and coil to create a spark, with wires scattered all over your motorcycle. In contrast, a Morris Magneto’s charge comes directly from a self-contained spinning magnet - straightforward and effective. The W&W selection includes magnetos for a wide model range. Mag housings and, where applicable, the gear covers are machined from billet aluminum; standard finish is “as machined”, however, some versions are available polished. All kits come complete with necessary hardware and mounting instructions.

Morris Magneto MM74E for OHV Big Twins 1936-1969
Morris Magneto MM74E for OHV Big Twins 1936-1969
The MM74E-type magnetos are mounted at a forward angle, replacing the stock distributor. They fit Knucklehead, Panhead, and Shovelhead engines from 1936 to 1969. Timing is manually set to full retard for starting, and—if the mounting screws are correctly adjusted—the unit automatically advances to full timing once the engine is running. On original engine cases up to and including 1964, we recommend mounting the magneto to the side. Mounting it in the forward-facing position requires grinding off the casting lug above the generator mount.

Morris Magneto MM3 for Sidevalves and Sportsters →1970
Morris Magneto MM3 for Sidevalves and Sportsters →1970
The MM3-type magnetos are mounted upright in place of the stock distributor. They fit flathead models from 1937 onward and Sportsters from 1957 to 1970. Timing is set manually to full retard for starting, and — if the mounting bolts are properly adjusted — the magneto will automatically rotate to the advanced timing position after the engine fires. Morris MM3 magnetos are a convenient replacement for well-aged original XLCH magnetos (29505-67).

Morris Magneto Model H5 for Generator Style Crankcase
Morris Magneto Model H5 for Generator Style Crankcase
Like on the H-D factory XR race bikes, this magneto mounts to the generator port. The Morris G5 fits all Big Twin engine cases with an open generator mount. Like all magnetos, it does not produce any current for lights, horn, or other electrical accessories—so if you're riding on the street, you’ll need to come up with an adequate lighting solution. The G5 features a fully automatic recoil spring coupling system for easy starting, whether by kick or electric starter. Installation may require minor modifications to the engine case. The magneto body can be mounted in various positions to avoid contact with exhaust pipes or cylinders.

Morris MRA Advance-Retard Kit
Morris MRA Advance-Retard Kit
The MRA is a revolutionary new device which aids starting by retarding the timing on fixed-position magnetos, helping to turn the infamous kick-backs and spit-backs into starts. When the cap-mounted lever is flipped, the points 'shift' 10 degrees, retarding your timing 20 degrees for starting. When the motor runs the lever is then locked in the advanced position by a rare-earth magnet. You'll love it! Fits clockwise turning Morris magnetos and other identically constructed magnetos like Joe Hunt, Fairbanks, etc. with cast housings.

Morris Sparky Tool
Morris Sparky Tool
With this smart tool you can quickly check if your magneto produces a spark or not. If you position the "Sparky" close to an ignition wire and the blue light comes on, the magneto produces a spark. Very helpful when you want to exclude the magneto as the cause of an ignition problem. This tool has been calibrated specifically for magnetos, but will work on just about anything that sparks.
