Wheels&Waves, Lido di Camaiore, I

The Italian Moment

The sun was beaming from an azzuro sky, when a wild bunch of gleaming, burbling, thundering and of course very stylish vintage motorcycles were descending on the seaside town of Lido di Camaiore in Tuscany: yes, it was that time of the year again, it was time for ruote e onde, sorry, Wheels & Waves!

The legendary French custom event has taken a little detour into neighbouring Italy, a little smaller, a little more al dente, a little more Italiano. Our favourite brand of murdersickle was on hand in droves, with many, many flatheads, Panheads and so on, but also – and that’s what makes the special flair of Wheels & Waves – many non Harley brands of bikes. The piazza was crammed with attractions: There was vendors’ stalls, a Wall of Death, a halfpipe, a bandstage – entertainment "al gusto"! Just next door "El Rollo" was attracting the crowds, eager to see vintage flat track racing in many classes. Old metal being thrashed around as fast as possible, gentlemen going sideways in the dust that darkened the sun. Eccezionale!

Inspired by the race action,

many spectators later went on their own bikes for rides in the picture-postcard Tuscan hills away from the sea: Bellissimo!

It was still a good idea to be back in time for the skate contest though, and there was a surf contest on the programme (remember: Wheels & WAVES). Waves were conspicuous by absence however. Che peccato!

But no problem, there was lots of other waves, namely sound waves. The bands were providing the fast and loud sound track for this Italian highlight of the moto calendar. Alla prossima!
