The 1340 Evo clutches, first generation

Following the buy-out of the Motor Company from the AMF Group, new concepts were urgently needed for the bikes. On the engine side the Big Twin called Evolution, on the drive side the wet clutch for the Big Twins. The clutch basket was a cast aluminum part, the hub a turned and milled part, also made of aluminum. The clutch basket is no longer mounted loosely but is firmly guided on the hub by an industrial ball bearing, even when disengaged. This type of bearing had already proven its worth on the Sportster for decades.

The ten springs of the predecessor model (built until spring 1984) had had their day; a diaphragm spring was the solution now. The physical properties of the diaphragm spring brought the force required to release the clutch to a level that was only known from Japanese bikes at the time. A small weak point of the design: the pad surface and therefore the transmittable torque is very limited. But there are replacement discs available from Barnett, as a complete set or as a steel or friction disc set.

What to consider with the clutch of the Big Twins 1984-1989?

As already mentioned, the linings are not the largest, so good condition of the friction and steel discs is a must. The lining thickness must be correct and the steel disks must not be wavy. The function of the diaphragm spring depends on precise adjustment, and the original spring retaining plate offers three options. It has 12 holes, which are marked A, B, C. Accessory parts only have 4 holes. If you want to adjust the spring, you have to work with washers under the screw heads.
