Front drum brake J models 1928 and 1928.

The first front brake on the Harley-Davidson IOE Big Twins, introduced in 1928, was a half-hub drum brake. What people like to shake their heads over today was state of the art back then and definitely much better than nothing. Apart from the deceleration effect, a front brake makes hill starts much easier. The simultaneous operation of foot clutch and foot brake is a coordinative requirement of a rather acrobatic nature.

Since the brake was only used on two model years at all and it can't simply be installed in a fork from 1927 or earlier (the tab for the brake anchor is missing), the selection of parts is quite simple. At the moment there is unfortunately the base plate only, but we will stay tuned, of course…
