1996 Harley-Davidson introduced an update of countershaft and the 1st gear of Evolution Sportster 4-speed gearboxes. On this countershaft the old left side thrust washers do not fit. Instead, the following 20.6 mm ID thrust washers must be used. Measuring the ID is recommended before ordering.

Countershaft 1st gear 4-speed Sportster 1986-1990, update 1996, additional information
In the 1996 countershaft update, the right side thrustwasher of the 1st gear was also subject to changes. Both the ID and OD were modified, with 17.5 mm and 33.7 mm being the new measures. The washer comes in the kit when you order one of the updated shafts, but H-D never issued a part number for this washer. Anyway the older washers will fit the later counterschaft.
