Early accessories: the auxiliary headlights

As early as in the Teens the factory started to offer auxiliary headlights in the accessory catalogs. All types of riders would benefit from additional lighting at night or in bad weather, be it with a diffusing lens for fog driving or a clear lens for additional high beam. Since then, Harley-Davidson's auxiliary headlights have become indispensable.

No minimalism

In contrast to minimalist bobbers or choppers, the Duo Glides and Electra Glides, Softail Heritages and Road Kings, Ultra Classics and Road Glides like to be adorned with a full set of lights and turn signals, since the 2000s also with LED inserts, e.g. from SpeedFire. And with these lamps they really cut the dark! For all those who find round lamps a bit too outdated stylistically, there are Bates Light-Bars and light triangles.

Can I mount any shape of auxiliary lights?

Yes, when it comes to the question of shape, the authorities are generous. Not so, however, when it comes to approvals. In countries that follow the harmonized ECE regulation system, a B on the lens confirms approval as a fog lamp and an R confirms approval as a driving lamp, plus a test number. In this way, the manufacturer guarantees not only a certain brightness, but also usability for the specified purpose. Only auxiliary lamps marked in this way can be used without complaint.
