Starter Shafts and Actuating Mechanism for Sportster →1980 and Big Twin →1988

Between starter motor and clutch

A whole series of parts ensure that the rotating power of the starter motor reaches the clutch. Within the starter housing sits the starter shaft and on it the pinion with a sleeve, plus a gear that provides the reduction of the speed. The bushing runs in bearings and, of course, it takes a whole lot of small parts to keep it all together and working nicely and smoothly.

Different parts for Sportster and the Big Twins.

Even though the function is the same, the two series use different parts. To help you know your way, we've not only listed the parts, we show how they work together in "exploded views".

Parts manual owners can also get to the part they're looking for by using the original part number in our search function.
