Do I have to readjust the carburetor after fitting accessory air filters?

With most accessory air filters, it is to be expected that the air volume will increase compared to a standard filter. However, more air does not automatically mean more fuel. Custom air filters therefore always require the jets or the adjusting screws to be readjusted in order to reliably prevent a lean mixture. The consequence of a mixture that is too lean is a loss of power or even mechanical damage due to overheating. Harleys generate optimal power at around 10% excess fuel, i.e. a rich mixture. The unburned fuel then also cools the combustion chamber.



S&S Mini Teardrop Air Cleaners

DynaMite Knee-Saver

Running an S&S Super E or G carb on Knuckleheads and Panheads results in the Teardrop air cleaner sticking out pretty far and interfering with your right knee. This low profile version features a shortened cover and a modified base plate which reduces the overall height of the air cleaner assembly by 25 mm. Thus you gain more legroom and the whole air cleaner tucks closer to the engine. Looks good on other models, too.

Teardrop air filters

The design from S&S. Teardrop is so strongly synonymous with performance that it has been and continues to be copied. Here is the original from S&S and one with small improvements from Dynamite.
