Forks for IOE Models

Forks for IOE Models

Suspension fork, Cushion Fork, IOE and early SV models.

Most early Harley-Davidson front forks follow the so-called "leading-link" principle. This term can be derived from the positions of the front wheel axle and the pivot point of the short rocker arms ("rockers"). The pivot point of the rockers is at the lower end of the rigid fork and the front wheel axle is in front of this pivot point. In comparison, on the Harley-Davidson Sport model (W 1919-1921 series) and on old Indians, the pivot point of the rocker is in front of the wheel axle. This is why these forks are referred to as "trailing link forks". The principle of "leading links" was used by Harley-Davidson from 1908-1957, when the last Springer forks were installed in Servi-Cars.

Forks of early single-cylinder models and V-twin models up to 1918 had the fork springs placed inside the suspension fork tubes. In the 1923 external springs were added, which were supported on the bridge of the spring fork. Over the years, a total of nine different leading link fork types have been developed and refined. The selection of spare parts therefore requires care. The specified spare part numbers should rather be double-checked.
