K-model and Sportster 1957-1970: four gears and dry clutch

Equip the primary housing with an oil bath for a long chain life and then install a dry clutch anyway ...

The first clutches of the new unit type Sportster engines can be recognized by the large steel bell on the clutch, which looks at you after draining the primary oil and removing the cover and which is fastened to the clutch basket with 12 #10 screws. Under the cover you will find a thoroughly contemporary design with 6 coil springs, each of which pressurizes seven friction and seven steel discs.

What should I pay particular attention to with the Sportster dry clutch?

There is not much to look out for with this type of clutch, apart from age-related marks on the clutch hub and clutch basket, which make occasional replacement advisable. Unfortunately, the clutch basket is neither available new nor as an accessory part. All other spare parts for the Sportster clutch up to 1970 can be found at W&W Cycles. For the racers we even have an Extra Plate Kit from Barnett or aramid fiber coated friction plates. The Barnett plates can also cope with a bit of oil in case the clutch cover gasket is no longer in best condition.
