Day 22, Monday, January 22

Juan has an insider tip for the ride back for us. A secret shortcut to the main road, so secret, that for years nobody seems to have used it. As we arrive by means of machete and compass at the end of the path through bamboo and reeds, we know why: no bridge, but a lively little river, wide enough to make crossing it another expedition. The road is on the other bank.

We cut down enough bamboo to build a float large enough to carry one bike. Floatability is ensured by the backpacks we have been lugging around for weeks that really are 50 liter drums with carrying straps. Great to keep scooters of all kinds from sinking. Gerardo uses his deep knowledge of knots and splices to tie up everything nice and snug.
