Regulators for Use without Battery

Regulator for bikes without battery

AC alternators on Harley-Davidson motorcycles can't actually be run without a battery as a load and buffer. So at least not without unwinding the stator and rewinding it with about half the number of turns. Unfortunately, the people who can do this by hand so that the winding still works afterwards, died out around the turn of the millennium at the latest.

Cycle Electric developed a regulator for the 1981-1988 alternator winding (probably the most commonly used stator in custom projects) that works without a battery as a buffer, keeping the voltage and current at levels conducive to minimum 12V electrical systems.

This stator is compatible with all original engine cases 1970-1988 and with many accessory cases. So together with the stator, this J regulator covers a wide range of model years and allows for various custom projects with magneto ignition.
