Clutch parts for Sportster from 1991

In 1991, after servicing four years as a part-time alternator, the clutch was already obsolete. The rotor moves to the crankshaft as on the other models and the new clutch is only responsible for the frictional connection. The spring, friction and steel disks are borrowed from the large displacement models, as is the system of holding the diaphragm spring directly on the lugs of the clutch hub via a seat ring and a retaining ring. Disassembly of the spring and plates is therefore only possible with special tools and a lot of care - otherwise a new clutch hub is due. See clutch parts for Big Twin 1990-1997.

What is the benefit of an extra plate kit?

The friction lining surface of the clutch is dimensioned ex works for the power developed by the respective engine. If the power is increased by modifications to the carburetor, exhaust, camshaft, etc., the clutch can no longer transmit it fully or will in any case always operate at the limit. To protect the material of the springs and linings, we recommend increasing the number of clutch plates. To ensure that the overall thickness of the friction and steel plate package is not changed and the spring force is not increased to such an extent that the clutch may no longer disengage at all, the spring plate in the middle of the plate package is removed when installing an Extra Plate Kit and replaced with two steel plates and one friction plate.
